Position
Initial statements of Cathedral Square being a democratic space was and assumption. Cathedral Square has never been a democratic space. What is and what can a democratic space give today’s society?
Design Drive
- Do a design investigation of the Square as an extreme place of democracy. A place where democratic up rise is accommodated. A place of protest.
- Explore designing in the mid-ground of the extreme democratic and ‘real issues’ of toady, exploiting the tension between everyday life and protest.

Precedent study
Squares of Adelaide
As a Square that doesn't work it has been programmed to:
- Designed around a central square, with supposedly less important smaller squares around the outside
- Activated streets that surround the Squares
- Set in a colonial grid, with the Square designed to act as the Centre of the City
- Edges fragmented
- Intersected by strong axial roads through the Square
Place des Terraux
- Location: Lyon Plaza, France
- Designed by Christian Drevet in 1994
- A formal square that relies on successful edges for pedestrian interaction
- With road passing through square the pedestrian vs vehicular element exists
- A historic site with historic and cultural elements within the square
- A vertical element added with columns and water jets

Melbourne CBD
- Refer to reading "Melbourne: Back From the Edge" (once its done).
- Precedent of a sprawling city that has re-strengthed its CBD to add civic and public life into it through public and privately funded public projects.
- Use the 1985 strategy plan to see how the city avoided becoming obsolete. (Have emailed melbourne city council in regards to getting a copy, email reference number 003585.)
- The city of Melbourne shares a grid similar to that of Christchurch
- the drive towards a pedestrian friendly city that was enforced by the urban design unit using urban design techniques
