Ski Dubai

Location: Ski Dubai is located in the Middle East, in the United Arab Emirates. It sits near the coast of the Persian Gulf. Two of the larger highways run right by the facility.
Designer: Think Well Design and Production were the ones who created the interior of Ski Dubai. They took it from conceptual into reality. Think Wells main designs are theme parks throughout the world which are rich in texture, emotion, detail, and originality. Doing the light design for Ski Dubai is Francis Krahe.
Design/Programmatic Goals: The goals of this project were to create an indoor ski slope of its kind anywhere in the world. One of the concepts for this was to imitate a Canadian mountain landscape. It is a necessity to keep the real snow from melting, so in order to maintain the temperature at 30.2 degrees Fahrenheit, they have 23 massive AC units. They have tubing running through the floors to keep the base of the snow frozen.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Some of the strengths of Ski Dubai are that it is a resort for everyone. It is within the Mall Of Emirates. There are four key features which make this such an exciting place:
1. The Size – It covers 2.4 million square feet
2. Magic Planet – It is the largest indoor family entertainment center in the country
3. Five star Kempinski Hotel
4. And finally Ski Dubai
It has 5 meters (16.4 feet) of instillation on the roof to keep away the blistering temperatures of the summer in Dubai. After hitting the slopes you can enjoy a hot meal in the restaurant in the ski area. To make it easier to get to the top again, it has a fully operational chair lift. They use the old snow to keep the water cool for the next day’s snow. It has a state of the art installation system. Some disadvantages are that a previous smaller indoor ski area in Japan was closed down due to cost issues. Hopefully that will not happen to Ski Dubai.
Success/Failure: Ski Dubai is a total success to date. It accomplishes its goals and pleases the people, even when it is 122 degrees Fahrenheit outside.
