Roberts, Amanda. 1998 Bare Squares - future directions for Adelaide's urban public space.

  • Squares often associated with power and wealth.

The majority of places that hold significance for communities are event and people related. The built form merely acts as a stage set. Constant process of layering of social and cultural meaning. A sqaure should be able to adapt and evolve with a city.

  • Adeliade can not support an influx of more restaurants and cafes there is a limited population and no projected growth. That niche has already been filled by Rundle Street.

By encouraging the use of the squares as temporary theatre spaces, band venues and day and night festivities, perhaps it would be posible to start creating the essential layers of meaning needed for successful urban space.
