• DESIGNER
- In 2000, several Pegram individuals with diverse professional backgrounds living and working in Pegram united to address the lack of adequate recreational programs and facilities in the Pegram community.
- They formed the organization Friends of Pegram Park.
- The group sought input from the community, talked with experts, set goals and created a conceptual plan to improve and enhance the park.

• DESIGN INSPIRATION
- There are approximately 35,912 people in Cheatham County and 2,162 in Pegram, TN. There is no YMCA branch, no public swimming pool, no youth center, or recreation center in the entire county. Inner cities are addressing their recreational needs with after-school programs, tutoring, mentor programs, arts and culture, sports and fitness. Our rural community is in great need of these programs as well.
- STRENGTHS
- Over the years, the park layout has been pieced together. The new design now provides continuity and accessibility to all areas of the park as well as park beautification.
- In the Spring of 2003, Friends of Pegram Park and many volunteers installed a colorful railroad themed playground that is safe and handicap accessible for all children. The new playground was dedicated to the town of Pegram on July 4, 2003 at a cost of approximately $70,000. By coordinating a volunteer installation day, Friends of Pegram Park was able to save $14,000.
- In the Spring of 2004, Friends of Pegram Park added a Gazebo near the railroad themed playground for all to enjoy. The new playground was dedicated to the town of Pegram on July 4, 2003 at a cost of approximately $23,000.
- In the Fall of 2004, a new playground was added for older children behind the ball field.
- Handicapped accessible restrooms were renovated and made available to park visitors in May 2005.
- The current walking trail is now accessible from the parking area and the trail surface was brought up to standards of the American with Disabilities Act and accessible to wheelchairs or strollers in June 2005. All playgrounds, the pavilion, the gazebo and tennis courts are now accessible to everyone.
- Additional parking is now available throughout the park.

• WEAKNESSES
- Ancillary park equipment including additional benches are needed throughout the park.
- The park needs a recreation center available for public use.
- A community garden with programs designed for the schools and senior citizens, a gathering area with programs that bring music performances to the community, art projects, and park beautification are all projects that still need to be addressed.
• DESIGN/PROGRAMMATIC GOALS
- It’s primary purpose is celebrating and strengthening the community through the park.
- Because the town of Pegram was once a train town, and originally called Pegram Station, Friends of Pegram Park decided to incorporate that historical significance as part of the park and playground.
- Recreational programs enhance the lives of citizens by reducing crime, stimulating creativity, providing education and encouraging health in fundamental ways.
- The park includes three ball fields, batting cage, a covered picnic area with shelter and fireplace, a stage area, numerous picnic tables and grills, children's playground, walking track, basketball and lighted tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, the city fire hall and much more.

• FINANCIAL/FUNDING
- In the past several years, Friends of Pegram Park has been fortunate to receive three Cheatham County Grants for $25,000 each. The Town of Pegram was also awarded a $100,000 LPRF grant to improve Pegram Park. With the help of this grant and community contributions, Friends of Pegram Park has complete many of our goals.
- It’s continued funding will be used to help support community activities, a community garden, and programming projects in the Park for all to enjoy.

• HISTORY
- During the stagecoach days, travelers would pass a settlement on the Charlotte Turnpike where the Pegram family lived. Records show that George Scott Pegram, Jr. was the owner of approximately nineteen hundred and eighty acres, making him the largest landowner in the area. Because of this, the community was named Pegram.
- Before 2000, the park was mainly just a plain old small town park, not consisting of anything to special. During the year 2000, The Friends of Pegram Park organization was established and the founders came up with a concept plan for the park to really bring and reunite the community.
