Manufacturing / extraction processes
The basic core ingredients of paint consist of: Pigment ( colour ), Resins ( binders), Solvents ( dispersing media ) Pigments: pigments are insoluble ground up solids which provide the colouring in the paint film. Resins: these are what form the solid paint film. They adhere the pigment particles to the meduim which the paint is being applied too. Solvents: This is the meduim which the resins and piments are suspeneded in. They make the paint thinner and allow it to be applied easier. then they evaporate away as the paint drys.
Drying: paint can dry in a number of ways, which can be categorised into: Enamel, Lacquer, latex Enamel: drys by a chemical change into another product which does not redissolve in the solvents used. Lacquer:dry by evaporation of solvent and do not under go a chemical change. Latex: in this catergory the solvent is generally water and the water evaporates and the resin particles bond together and with a coalescing agent form a film. More information under Visiting resene
The main ingredient in paint is titanium dioxide which is a non toxic material and retaines its whiteness through exposure to water and solvents. This is used as the base mixture, from what the other paints are made with the addition of required slected additives depending on the desired properties. From the large photo under visiting resene you can see the the three levels. The white paint is mixed at the top layer and is then changed to the desired paint type on level two, and is then packaged and prepared for delivery at the bottom level.
Material properties
Aesthetic Properties The aesthetic properties of a paint refers to it colour, gloss and opacity
The colour of paint is dependent upon the pigments used in the coating
The gloss levels of a paint depend on the type of resin used and the smoothness of the film surface. Protrusion of pigment particles through the paints surface decreases its uniformity and and scatters light rays in many directions creating a less glossy and darker appearance .
Opacity in paint refers to how much pigment is used in the paint.
Alkyd paints: contain synthetic resins which are modified with natural oils. Dry faster, harder, better gloss retention. yellow with age, become brittle, require involved cleaning of painting equipment
Acrylic paints: Both solvent based and water based forms. paint hardening by evaporation. can be applies to damp and slightly alkaline surfaces unlike alkyds. Remain flexible and hard throughout its life allowing superior weathering resistance. unaffected by uv light, good gloss retention, non yellowing, durable, low toxicity, little odour, rapid drying, easy clean up in water
Vinyl Paints: uses pva resin, has a softer film finish and are a cheap alternative to acrylics
Format & finish of materials
Depending on the type of look desired most- most can be achieved. The Paint world has come along way from the traditional bucket and brush in the hand. With people that want to create their unique look and money is no object amazing ideas are created
Traditonal/aged look: can be achieved by using natural pigments, dyes, waxes and sand minerals
Glazzed options: are avalible in nuetral tones, and some that are gently textured
designer finshes can be created so that pebbles or small stones can be added for flexibity and sturdy added with thick resin sheets.
Technology has allowed that some tiles are able to have digital printing on their tiles weather it is family pictures placed in the bathroom or tresured object. These are produced through machine.
For the more hands on job weather it is on a big or small scale detailed features can be achieved by using sponges, rags, combs, or coarse brushes
Layering with oil based paints or smudging colour into a topcoat of varnish are other poplar ways or creating the unique look
If a specific mood is need to be created flat chalky tones are layerd over each other
Allowing the amount of money spent The finished material can applied to radiators, bathroom tiles, fridges, kithen cupboards. marble imitations can be created although at a heavy price tag!
Paint is similar it is made up of Pigment, Meduim, Solvent Generally in finishes of matt, gloss, satin
Common fixing methods
Depending on what the suface the use of sandpaper among the walls of a painted house/building is a common method. If on the outside a faster way is to waterblast if the paint is not appering to come off then sanding the remaing areas by hand or electric sander.
Road marking is re painted eventually when the markings fade.

Durability and maintenance requirements
Selecting the correct paint for the desired suface is very important because this will depend on how long the paint will last. Washable and vinyal are good ideas if the area is high maintence.
The durability of the paint on a house or wall for example will only be how much effort was put into taking care of the surface underneath. Preparing the surface by a thorough sanding or waterblasting and removing the old exsisting surface and filling any holes in will give the paint a good chance to stick to the surface for a much longer amount of time. If no sanding or pre-surface attention has been done paint will peel, flake off in a much shorter time frame
The ease of cleaning a painted surface comes down to the gloss level of the paint. The more smooth ( higher gloss level ) the surface the easier it is to remove dirt and grime. Alkyd paints generally are more glossy than acrylics and for that reason are ideally suited to areas which require alot of cleaning.
Following the instructions is very important and how to apply paint on any given surface before creating a disaster
Todays technology has allowed the manufactueros of paint to create almost any forms such as metalics, tiles, gloss, waterproof, hardwearing floor paints, non slip, blackboard paint, easy wipe sufaces, even organic and odourless, solvent free
some Questions to ask yourself are Does the area get much sun, any if at all? Is the area known to be wet? how big is the space - to confirm what colour mite be needed.
LIGHT colours last longer outside

Life-cycle / recycling possibilities
The lifecycle of paint is inextricably intertwined with that of the substrate to which the paint is applied. The durability of the structure and the materials it contains are important factors: the longer a product lasts and the less often its surface needs to be painted, the less resources that are consumed. This also places demands on the end-user, because since choice and responsible use of the right paint lower the environmental impacts of the object to be painted.
From the trip to the Resene Paint factory in Lower Hutt we were informed about how paint is now being re used, with collection of half full paint buckets being used inan effort to re use the pigments within the paint. The outcome of this results in a grey coloured paint which is used for covering graffiti. Peter Edmunds, the manager of the plants stated that "... it's a start and the technology for recycling paint in this style is only new and still being developed..."

Image 1 shows how the paint being use in traffic systems. Different color and pattern indicates direction or certain kind of rules. So paints become a very necessary and important to unban landscape structure.
Image 2 shows how the paint being use to decorate the ground in this public space ,also the paint being use to show the certain dirction (on the right side of this photo).Paint is a good material to decorate ground surface, such as kid playing ground, gardens, squares and other pedestrian walking areas.
Image 3 shows paints being use to 'make up' the face of some normal buildings in the city. This is a wonderful way to use paints, because after these 'make up', those uglily concrete buildings be turned to beautiful views.Paints is making the city more colorful and attractive.
Image 4 shows a terrible car park building with street paints all over the place.I think paints turn this boring car park to a intersting place. However, street paints can be annoying and problem. In this case,it is acceptable.
Image 5 shows how paints being use in Cobblstone park, the red color definitely make those structures outstanding, also the park looks nice when the red color contrast to the green color of grass. However, the color seems too much and too strong,it makes people do not want to spend too much time there.I believe the paints being use to help to solve the problem of those homeless people.
Image 6 shows the paints being use in the outside wall of Forbidden City -----A walled enclosure of central Beijing, China, containing the palaces of former Chinese rulers. Formerly closed to the public (hence its name). The red color represents the imperial power ,it separate royal family to others. Paints can be use to represent some certain meanings ,it has different meaning in different places and changing from time to time.
