Oklahoma State University Campus Master Plan

Positive Parts of the OSU Master Plan

  • Goals are well established relating to a visitor friendly campus, directional signage, pedestrian and vehicular pathways
  • The goals are laid out in a way to show what they want to do and then in sub headings they have a more elaborate idea of waht they want.
  • The design guidelines are well laid out and very specific with exactly what they want.
    • Descriptions are very well laid out for:
    • Signage - graphic format, size, and color
    • Lighting - organization, patterns, consistency, and illumination levels
    • Railings - handrails and guiderails, height, visual minimization, and color
    • Trash cans - Heavy liners, color, and placement
    • Walls - enclosing, screening areas, must be red "OSU blend" brick with cast stone caps
    • Benches - Must be compatible with existing architecture, material and color
  • They also are very articulate on what they want with romantic places, recreational park spaces, and other locations and forms
  • Circulation throughout the Oklahoma State University campus is also well described with areas for how they want bicycles, pedestrians, and cars to travel.
  • The wide selection of possible trees that are acceptable to use help to show what the university wants on their campus

Similarities to Valley City State University

Many of OSU‘s Master plan goals are similar and can be applied to the Valley City campus.

  • OSU would like to create a visitor friendly campus by

-Providing uniform directional signage

-Defining pedestrian and vehicle gateways and entries to campus

  • OSU wants to enhance campus safety by

-increasing illumination of all campus walkways and streets

-provide sufficient emergency call boxes

  • OSU's plan suggested coordinating with the surrounding city of Stillwater to improve streetscapes of connecting streets.

I think this could apply to Valley City as well to help tie the campus into the rest of the community.

  • Oklahoma State requires that all walls are “OSU blend” red brick. This creates a theme that ties parts of the campus together.
  • Valley City State has started to do the same thing with their retaining walls and building bases. If more walls

are to be incorporated into your design they should tie into the existing walls.

Differences to Valley City State University

  • According to the Entries and edges section of the Master Plan

The edges of campus should impart a perception of the boundary between the University, the city of Stillwater, and surrounding territory.

  • Although implementing boundaries may be important to Oklahoma State University, it is the opposite for Valley City. We would

like to incorporate the city as much as possible and encourage interaction between the community and the campus.

  • Oklahoma State University would like to increase the size of their walkways to better improve pedestrian flow and access.
  • This is not a major concern for the Valley City campus mainly because their student body is much smaller than

Oklahoma State. Sidewalk congestion was not a visible problem during our site visit
