Lessons learnt from Field Operations' approach to Fresh Kills

Fresh Kills and Owhiro area sites are very similar in context, character and previous use.

Whilst Fresh Kills is a larger site with a larger surrounding population, they are comparable for many of their underlying characters.

Land/Water edge

While Fresh Kills is dissected by creeks and Owhiro Bay area has Cook's Strait and a proposed Marine Reserve.

Both sites have lost natural ecological 'filtration' systems and altered ground water and therefore the adjoining aquatic ecosystems have suffered.

City/Nature edge

Both sites have the ability to contribute to the recreational capacity of their cities - thus providing assistance to support higher density residential development.

Previous uses

Local government services have advantaged from both sites - however local residents have fought for the restoration for recreational and ecological purposes.

Cultural and Social values

The Owhiro Bay site has been inhabited by two different iwi and has identified significant sites along the bay. Whilst there are no known waahi tapu some sites are considered taonga.

The relocation of the World Trade Centre debris to Fresh Kills, consecrates the site. Despite the best efforts of recovery teams the number of human remains left on site is unknown.
