Drafting

+ Read the books and practice the lessons.

~ Start to develop your skills by emulating and following the tips given to you from your drawing class texts.
~ Trace. There is nothing wrong with tracing. It will help you learn what the texts are trying to explain.

+ Pick up tips from upper classmen (like your mentor first years). (i.e. When using a drafting pencil or lead holder, rotate the instrument at least half a turn over the length of the line. This will help ensure a constant line thickness.)

+ Practice, Practice, Practice. Enough said.

+ Develop your own style. Make the drawings your own (but do not stray too far away from the standards).

User Input Tips

General

  • Work from TOP to BOTTOM, RIGHT to LEFT if you are right handed, LEFT to RIGHT if you are left handed.
  • Pick up and then move your straight edge, do not drag. This will help prevent smearing/smudging.
  • Draw either your horizontal or vertical lines first then do the other. This will also help prevent smearing/smudging by letting the previous line dry.
  • Cover over work that has been done, even if it is not finished. It will protect from accidental marks and absorb moisture if you happen to lean on the paper instead of the final work itself.

Sketching

+ Find tools and mediums you are comfortable with.

+ Draw, Draw, and Draw some more. Even if it is not perfect, it is still practice.

+ Doodle. When you find yourself absolutely bored during...something... doodle in the margins or on a blank sheet (try drawing people and vegetation).
