Dowling, R. 2001. Inner Sydney’s Main Streets In Debating the City, edited by J Barrett and C Butler-Bowdon, 53-67. Sydney: Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.
A discussion on the effects on retail (consumption) within the CBD by the social agenda of society with a focus on Sydney. The decline of consumption in the later decades of the 20th century are covered outlining the effects on the CBD rather than why the consumption declined. The reading then moves through what has happened within the CBD, demographically and socially to outline how the CBD is again becoming a buzzing part of the city. It moves through the shift from industrial to post-industrial economy (manufacturing to service and information as motors of economic growth and source of employement). The importance of tourism as a consumption element on the CBD is outlined, and emphasises that this should help structure urban elements, encouraging consumption in and around the central city. See Darling Harbour in Sydney. Inner city living effects on consumption as lifestyle changed within the central city has in turned changed the consumption elements, especially those eating based.
Points
- Raises issues within Christchurch CBD that it seems Sydney has already passed through, in terms of the city sprawling and missing out on an inner city consumption benifits
- Emphasis on how an urban plan cannot be structured until social and demographic issues now and in the future are truely considered. Only then can the urban spaces and consumption elements be placed and organised within the central city.
